Fez, a city steeped in history and mystery, holds the secrets of its past dating back to 789 A.D. Founded by Moulay Idriss II, Fez's origins are shrouded in legend. Some speculate its name stems from the ancient Berber term "Fazaz," while others tell tales of a golden axe that split the river, giving birth to the city's name.
However, it wasn't until the influx of refugees from Cordoba in Spain and Tunisia in the 9th century that Fez began to flourish. Despite internal strife among settlers, peace eventually prevailed with the arrival of the Almoravid empire in 1070 A.D. Under their rule, Fez thrived, boasting impressive walls that still define its historic quarter, Fez El-Bali.
By the 12th century, Fez had become the largest city globally, bustling with trade routes connecting Africa and Europe. Its renowned tanneries crafted exquisite leather goods, while its cultural and intellectual influence grew under the Merenids, who established it as Morocco's capital in 1250 A.D.
Fez's golden era saw the birth of Fez el-Jdid, a new city adorned with grand architecture and lush gardens. This period gave rise to the distinctive "Fassi" style, blending Andalusian and Almohad traditions, evident in landmarks like Medersa Bou Inania and Medersa el-Attarine.
Today, Fez stands as a testament to its illustrious past, earning titles like the "Athens of Africa" and the "Mecca of the West." Its vibrant culture, historic landmarks, and scholarly heritage continue to attract visitors from around the globe, eager to immerse themselves in the timeless allure of this Moroccan gem.
